What are Anti-Aging, Regenerative, and Functional Medicine?
Anti-Aging Medicine is a medical specialty aimed at the early detection, prevention, treatment, and reversal of age-related decline. It is based on evidence and science.
Regenerative medicine optimizes the body’s own mechanisms of self-repair. It also adds proven, external treatments and technologies to assist the body in this repair. Examples of this include optimizing one’s hormones and optimizing our adult stem cells through exercise, glucose control, and insulin control.
Functional medicine takes an approach that treats illness and promotes wellness by focusing on the bio-chemically unique aspects of each patient, then tailoring interventions to restore physiological, psychological, and structural balance. It seeks to find the source of dysfunction in one’s body and address it to lead to better functioning.
We feel these specialty areas of medicine offer the ability to better address our patients healthcare needs. We focus on a more personalized-approach and view the body as a whole rather than an isolated constellation of symptoms and systems. We are always looking to incorporate the best medical practices by blending traditional Western medicine with integrative medicine: using the latest lab testing and other diagnostic techniques, supplements, herbs, detoxification programs, drug therapy in certain cases, and more.
Who can benefit from these types of medicine?
Almost anyone can benefit from these types of medicine. It treats all ages. A few examples of this include:
- Children with ADD, other behavioral disorders, or obesity can benefit from a careful evaluation into their lifestyle, environmental factors, nutrition, and other things that may be contributing.
- Athletes can benefit from evaluations of their body’s nutritional status and metabolism pathways to make sure they are supplying and replenishing the correct building blocks for their body. Minerals and vitamins in the body can get depleted with moderate-heavy intensity workouts and if not replaced appropriately, can lead to disease with time.
- Health-conscious people looking for the best preventive healthcare can benefit from a full evaluation to determine their individual needs and best way to maintain health and wellness.
- Women with infertility problems can benefit from investigation into possible contributing factors, hormonal balancing, and more.
- Diabetics can benefit by working on the mechanisms to improve insulin function and glucose regulation.
- Peri-menopausal women can benefit through hormonal balancing with bioidentical hormones.
- People with thyroid disorders, adrenal disorders, multiple sclerosis, and more.
What are Dr. Kiba’s credentials?
Dr. Deanne Kiba is a dually board certified physician in Anti-Aging and Regenerative Medicine as well as in Family Practice and Osteopathic Manipulative Treatment. She has also completed the Advanced Fellowship in Anti-Aging, Regenerative, and Functional Medicine through the American-Academy of Anti-Aging Medicine.
What all does an initial visit involve?
Your initial visit will include a complete, extensive review of your medical history, nutrition, activity level, environmental exposures, and more relating to the reason you are presenting to us. An initial visit usually lasts anywhere from 1 to 1 ½ hours, depending on the extent of your complaints and history. At this visit we may also recommend further investigation into your nutritional status, hormone levels, thyroid function, etc. as we see fit. We do ask that you bring the following to this visit: your completed medical history form, copies of any labs you have had in the past year, and copies of any other extensive/ unique testing you have had at any point (food allergy testing, genetic testing, etc.).
What is required for the specialized testing that is offered?
While this testing may not be necessary for everyone, it can offer a vast array of information that we are not able to get through the conventional, basic labs that are generally tested. Depending on the test recommended, it may include saliva collection at home, blood tests, or urine tests. There are a handful of specialized testing centers that process these types of tests. Two of the primary ones we deal with are Genova Diagnostics and Metametrix, which recently combined forces. You can read more information about some of their testing at www.gdx.com or www.metametrix.com.
What does an initial follow up visit involve?
At your initial follow up visit, we will review any testing that has been done and review your individualized treatment plan/ recommendations. Dr. Kiba likes to schedule this follow up after all of the testing has been done and she has had time to interpret all of the results. Because no two people are the same, the same results in one person may require a completely different treatment than in another person. Determining this involves taking the entire history that was obtained at your first visit into account. For this reason, it does take Dr. Kiba some time to come up with a plan to optimize your own personal health. Her goal is to work with you as a team to achieve this which does require some work on your part to put that plan into action. Together with her, your hard work and dedication to your own health and wellbeing should make this process well worth it.
These types of follow up visits usually last around 45 min.- 1 hour.
How often do I need to follow up?
How often you will need to follow up will depend on what you are being seen for and also on how you are feeling and progressing. For example, if we have you on a customized bioidentical hormone regimen then we like to see you every 3 months initially in order to evaluate the effectiveness of the treatment. Once you are doing well on a given regimen, the visits space out to every 6-12 months. These types of follow up visits are considered focused follow-ups and generally last 20-30 minutes. On the other hand, someone who is coming to us for general wellness plans/ preventive care may only need to be seen once a year just to make sure we have all systems and areas of their life optimized to their full potential. These visits would generally be about 45 minutes long.
How much does a visit cost?
Prices vary on the type and nature of the visit. Initial visits range from $345-$395 depending on the reason for visit and the complexity level of your case. Extended follow up visits (the initial follow up visits and the once a year visits) cost $250. The brief/ focused follow up visits cost $125.
Are these visits covered by my insurance?
We are passionate about what we do and we feel that we have a calling to provide as many people as possible with the highest quality holistic, natural health care as possible. Just as our services are unique to this specialty field, our financial policies also set us apart from mainstream medicine. In today’s healthcare environment, the actual cost for doctors to provide services continues to rise, while the reimbursement from insurance companies decreases. Most doctors and clinics are forced to cope by keeping their office visits very brief, so that they can see many patients within a given time frame. This often involves set protocols based on a person’s diagnoses to streamline the process and save time. Due to the fact that we are focused on each and every individual person and trying to individualize care, we require much longer visits. For this reason, we are not contracted with insurance companies. We do, however, offer itemized receipts with the codes for our services so you may submit them for possible reimbursement. The reimbursement amount is completely dependent on your insurance company and individual plan and therefore we encourage you to check with them directly on this.
What forms of payment are accepted?
Payment is due at the time of your visit. We accept cash, checks, and most all credit cards.
*Cancellation Policy - Please not that there will be a $150 cancellation fee for new patients and $50 for established patients if you cancel with less than 12 hours notification.
